"Saturday Call to Sunday Morning Worship" on WHEP

"Classic liturgical worship is not well understood by its practitioners or the public," Pastor Dave observed. "So, we're going to share our view of worship with our Baldwin community."
Several years ago Zion Lutheran Church of Silverhill broadcast "God's Lovingkindness in the Morning" on a regular basis on WHEP with the help of a small grant for radio ministry. The format was devotional, but it also provided a taste of the liturgical.
WHEP's Clark Stewart (l) posed with a token CD containing "Zion's Saturday Call to Sunday Morning Worship," received from Pastor Dave Johnson (from Silverhill's Zion Lutheran Church). The summertime Saturday morning devotional with a "Lutheran" flavor will begin airing on "WHEP - Radio Baldwin," 1310 on the AM dial, beginning on July 3 at the 7:30 AM time slot.
The Zion congregation will begin anew on July 3, 2010, with programming on Saturday mornings at 7:30 AM using another small grant supporting broadcast ministry. The Saturday morning devotionals will explore a Lutheran view of worship and honoring God in worship. The fifteen minute devotional, entitled “Zion’s Saturday Call to Sunday Morning Worship,” will focus on attitudes for worship and will air over the summer months.

"God's Lovingkindness in the Morning" on WHEP
Sunday July 15, 2007 - Sunday, June 28, 2009

In 2007, Zion Lutheran Church of Silverhill, Alabama, received a $4,120 grant from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans (TFL). We are one of 8 congregations in the Association of Free Lutheran Congregations to share in the $43,000 grant given through the Foundation's Church Extension program. This TFL grant program gives seven Lutheran national church bodies $1,750,000 each year to develop new congregations and assist established congregations to undertake special evangelism programs.
The ministry was funded by an additional
short-term grant from another source through May of 2009.
Broadcasting on WHEP radio (AM 1310) began Sunday July 15, 2007, and was concluded on Sunday, June 28, 2009. The broadcast consisted of a 15 minute program at 6:44AM Sunday mornings, and a five minute devotional at 8:34AM weekday mornings.

Zion Lutheran Church’s radio program, “God’s Lovingingkindness in the Morning,” began its second year in July 2008 with a continuation of Sunday encouragement. Each program consists of a music introduction using Luther’s “A Mighty Fortress” followed by prayer, a Bible reading and commentary, and an invitation to join the congregation for Sunday morning worship.
It is "Year 2" for "God's Lovingkindness in the Morning," Zion Lutheran Church's Sunday morning devotional which airs at 6:44 AM. Station Co-Owner Patti Stewart of "Radio Baldwin" (WHEP) received the first MP3 disk installment for July 2008 from Zion.

Silverhill Science, Teacher Hellmich's Interview on First Day of School Year on WHEP on August 8, 2007

"We have a place for volunteers in the education of our children. Our schools are focused on academic studies, but we also are involved in 'character education,' growing the moral side of students. Individual volunteers and businesses can really help us," Miss Jo advises. Jo Hellmich, Science Teacher at Silverhill School, notes that a potential community volunteer can call his or her local school in Baldwin County or go to the
Baldwin County School website
, to learn how to help a specific school. Zion Lutheran Church of Silverhill invites Baldwin County community friends to hear Miss Jo at 8:34 on August 8, 2007 in the morning on WHEP, 1310 on the AM Radio Dial, when she is interviewed by Pastor Dave on the church's "God's Lovingkindness in the Morning" show.
Jo Hellmich, Science Teacher at Silverhill School, works on computer text for her interview with Pastor Dave on Zion Lutheran Church's "God's Lovingkindness in the Morning" for August 8, FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL YEAR 2007-2008. The brief interview will explore how members of the community can aid in education of our young people. It airs at 8:34 AM on WHEP, "1310 on the AM Radio Dial."

Zion Inaugurates "God's Lovingkindness in the Morning" on WHEP on July 15, 2007

“Yes, it is a commitment of time and energy. But, our Zion congregation wants people to know that God loves people. What better name than to use the translation for the Hebrew word that means ‘God's love, compassion, charity, and mercy’! The word we use for many English translations is a compound word, ‘lovingkindness,’” Pastor Dave said. “Our new radio program, ‘God’s Lovingkindness in the Morning,’ is a five minute devotional which will air on WHEP at 8:34 AM weekdays with an emphasis on the Bible."
Zion Lutheran Church's Pastor Dave Johnson (l) and WHEP-AM Radio personality Kenny Graves posed in the station's studios the week before "God's Lovingkindness in the Morning" began its broadcast schedule on the station. The program airs at 8:34 AM weekdays and 6:44 AM Sundays on WHEP.
Pastor Dave noted that, “On Sundays the program will expand to 15 minutes and air at 6:44 AM. The program is focused on God’s Word, so central to Lutheran understanding and teaching. God’s Word is always an encouragement to people of faith and hope for those seeking God. That’s why Ira Stanphill could pen the words in that hymn of generations past, 'Sing them over again to me--Wonderful words of Life./ Let me more of their beauty see--Wonderful words of Life./ Words of life and beauty, Teach me faith and beauty:/ Beautiful words, wonderful words, Wonderful words of Life.’ We still live in a time when we need those wonderful words found in God’s Holy Word.”
"God’s Lovingkindness in the Morning" began as a grant proposal to the Association of Free Lutheran Congregations (AFLC) in January of this year. Several months later Zion Lutheran Church of Silverhill learned that it was one of eight congregations in the AFLC to share in Thrivent Financial for Lutherans' Foundation’s “Church Extension” program. That program seeks to develop new congregations and assist established congregations to undertake special evangelism programs. Now with grant funds in hand, the Zion congregation invites folks in Central Baldwin to "tune in WHEP for a year of radio broadcasts focused on God's Word," Pastor Dave says. He notes that congregation members Charles Canning and Peter Midgarden have an oversight role in grant management and direction.
